yummies at khao sarn thai.
tom yum kung, steamed dumplings, broccoli in soy sauce with soy duck,
red curry with shrimp, with brown rice.
so dependable and good!

after riding around on our bikes checking out the post-Irene brooklyn,
(feeling very lucky that nothing too disastrous seemed to have happened
at least near by), looking for a place to duck from the still super crazy
wind & rain, we finally ended up at le gamin.
m got their amazing (though super rich) croque madame,
and i wasn't too hungry so i got their tartine platter, just to accompany
their delicious coffee (americano & café au lait).

pre-hurricane lunch (or 2nd breakfast) at lite bites.
veggie omelet sandwich and the short stack combo with
over easy eggs.
somehow very satisfying!

all the stores were boarding up their storefront glass panels
and taping up the windows.
the "we are open" sign was sprayed on while we were eating :

finally the weather has been cool enough for us to crave hot food.
on a very early-fall like afternoon, warm rice dishes at menkuitei felt
perfect & delicious - mabo tofu over rice and my seafood curry.
so satisfying.

brunch with friends at maggie brown.
didn't get to photograph all the meals, but m & i both got
crispy eggs over cheese grits dish with coffee.
so so good! if the eggs were a little less cooked (like overeasy)
it would've been even better, so the yolk runs into the grits a bit.
still, it was delicious.

amazingly delicious kimchi pasta with smoked oysters m made for dinner.
i wasn't even hungry but i got seconds it was so good.

tried food at recently opened el toro taqueria this evening.
maybe they're still figuring things out, but it was all pretty so-so.
the food was a little over-salted in general...
we got a fish burrito bowl and 3 enchilada platter (korean kimchi steak,
mole chicken, and shrimp) that came with beans & rice.
the prices were decent but the portions were small too.
definitely not nearly as good as other mexican places in brooklyn,
though i do like it more than the douchy calexico.

we stopped by van leeuwen for something more satisfying :

mint chip ice cream. so good!

somehow we hadn't been to nha toi in a while, but dang were
we missing out. but now, somehow, i can eat bread again,
so i got fish banh mi, m got a banh mi dac biet (classic) AND
a bowl of pho.
such a great meal.

sometimes one needs free pizza with beer.
today was such an occasion (?), so we stopped by lulu's for some.
pretty good for $5 a pop (tip included).

Sunday, August 14, 2011

dinner at habitat - m got a cob & corn salad (comes with a huge corn bread)
and i got 2 fish tacos. they were good, especially for tacos from a non-mexican joint.

Saturday, August 13, 2011

i made a kimchi jigae-ish stew dish for dinner, pretty perfect for a
cooler (thank god), rainy night.
msg free kimchi with our csa onions, garlic scapes, zucchini & store bought
mushrooms - and we ate it over brown rice, topped off with the csa eggs.
so good!

a huge meal at papacitos.
m's grilled chicken burrito afar, and my huge platter of
grilled tilapia, rice & beans, pickled red cabbage & tortillas.
good but so much food.
i should always go with their tacos.

csa veggie dinner!
it's hard to tell with the cheese & nutritional yeast covering it up,
but we did make a pretty decent stir-fry (which is always a hit or miss for me)
of kale, broccoli, pepper, grilled zucchini, garlic and smoked tofu.
then we also grilled some sweet corn, dressed it with smoked paprika,
olive oil, s&p, and some nutritional yeast.
feels so good to have a tummy full of veggies.

when we really need some good, clean food that isn't overpriced,
(today was such a day), ash box is our #1 choice.

turkey sandwich on ciabatta, my usual salad (this time, avocado & mushroom)
and onigiri combo, were all excellent.
i'd have taken a photo of inside of the onigiri, if it were possible to put
my hands down once bitten (though i imagine it wouldn't look as good
as it tastes).

having been eyeing on this newly discovered vietnamese place, aptly
named Banh Mi, we decided to give it a try.
as some yelp reviews show already (wish i'd read it before we tried),
this place was an overpriced disaster of mediocracy.

the shrimp spring rolls weren't bad, but the catfish bún was totally
tasteless if eaten without the fish (even with the teeny side of fish sauce
and copious addition of sriracha & plum sauce), and noodles were mushy
& overcooked.

the lemongrass chicken banh mi, which i didn't try, was said to be
using the wrong bread (not the rice flour kind that banh mis usually
use) and tasted stale and old.

too bad, because the menu sounded promising and different than some
other vietnamese places around brooklyn.

we had to get some dessert to cleanse our palate, so we rode our bikes
over to vamos al tequila for their yummy key lime pie & coffee :

having had to drop off some art for an upcoming show, we were in LIC
near Astoria today - which meant new food adventures for us!

due to it being so hot, we just wanted to go somewhere close to where we were,
so we decided (based on yelp) to try Arharn Thai on 36th ave.

the food was decent, though a little too heavily/aggressively spiced :
tom yum kung was excellent, green papaya salad was a bit too spicy,
and the seafood "spring rolls" were a bit too... fried. (i expected unfried spring rolls).

the catfish curry was delicious however, as was the dessert, mango with warm coconut rice.
the price tag wasn't too delicious, though, it being past the lunch special hour.
oh well.
