first home-cooked meal at our new place - both craving something clean & green yet
comforting, i whipped up something quick - rice, with kale miso soup.
i had mine with a poached egg that was perfectly cooked - so good and comforting,
and left us feeling so warm & cozy on a rainy, grey day. :D

lunch at ash box for a cleansing meal - we got both kinds of their specials, which
were pot-au-feu's of kielbasa and kimchi respectively, with avocado salad with deliciously
tangy mustardy dressing, and the amazing bagels! my favorite part was the bagel, which is
so surprising to say. i don't know what they did to them, or where they got them, but they
were incredible.

then for dinner, we tried waza ramen, which was a big let down.
their shoyu ramen was not very good, just mediocre. the bento box of salmon teriyaki
wasn't bad, decent amount as well, though their tempura was too battered for me.
next time i'll remember to go to menkuitei or go homemade for ramen!

a small break after our backbreaking final move (mostly because we're old now) at pillow cafe.
i was so tired and sore (yikes) so i didn't even feel much like eating but i was hungry.
the egg salad sandwich was good, though it was too mayo-y for my taste.
m's tuna salad sandwich was good as well. the cheesecake brownie was super rich,
so i could only have a bike - now if they would only have some good coffee.

then for dinner, some warm tortilla soup and bad tuna salad.
mole chicken (no photo) was good too but i didn't feel like meat much.

both of us were sick today (i've been sick for a week, so sick of it) and
wanting some healthy food, we headed to 'eat' cafe.

they've changed everything since we've last been there, but i think it's for the
better, even. the clean, healthy, super local food remains, but they added more
breadth of food, in a way, and more flavorfully so.

we ordered chicken stew, (they have meat now!), soup du jour, which was creamy
potato soup, and today's frittata, which had sweet potatoes, collard greens and onions
in it. they were all so good - somehow that potato soup was so delicious. simple, yet
amazing.

shanghai lee has been off its game a bit lately, and dang, i should've known to
order their chinese broccoli in lieu of one of these meat dishes (which were
particularly on the greasier and onion-ier side today).
moving means minimizing groceries, and we've been without much greens, sadly.
and the green peppers on pepper steak dish and the red curry chicken were nowhere
enough to sate my greens/veggies cravings.

and at night, i made kimchi friend rice, using up all that's left of our kimchi :
and was definitely more satisfying than what we had earlier.
i guess i'm glad that we'll be a bit more closer to chinatown when we move.

i dare say il porto has the best pizza in NYC. yes, i said it. (but chacun à son goût!)

today we got some arugula mushroom salad to top off the regular slices of classic
cheese & margherita pizzas.
arugula is always good in my book (so good atop the pizzas), but dang, their mushrooms
stole the show - what the hell do they do to them? so so good.

after moving some things to the new place (on our bikes for the past week!),
we stopped by mike's diner since we were craving their steak & eggs.
because of my cold, or because i had a cough drop before this, i couldn't taste much,
and didn't have much craving for anything, so i got a french toast, which was very...
mediocre. just so so.

BUT! their steak & eggs never fail. with grits, it's even better.
wish i had been hungry enough to order their chicken & waffles.
yum yum.

feeling like something brothy due to my cold, i cooked up some denjang jigae
again, this time with csa chard and potatoes.
and since we're on a mission to clear our fridge before moving, i cooked some
super-ripe kimchi, so i made a kimchi-bokkum with tofu in lieu of other sides.
surprisingly delicious for something whipped up with a stuffy head.

we've been trying to make the most out of our last week in the neighborhood.
today, we craved polish food, so we headed to lomzynianka, easily the best polish
restaurant for the money in the neighborhood.

the usual complimentary pickles/krauts, vegetable borscht soup for my sore throat,
meat loaf, and a "polish platter", which consists of a stuffed cabbage, bigos (hunter's stew),
kielbasa, pierogis, both dishes with mashed potatoes.
so so yummy & satisfying, though we probably will need another year before our craving
for polish food comes again.

somehow, our experience moving here & leaving here seems to be adding up to some kind of
a nice (well, kind of) symmetry - we ate here right before moving to our apartment,
and our heat/hot water is broken right now (and have to boil water for dousing baths), as was
the case when we first moved in. :(

we hadn't been to castros in probably over 3 years, and it was as great as i remember it!
i tried the grilled chicken torta, which reminded me a lot of california, and m had a huge
beef steak burrito. yummy!

counting down to our final days in the neighborhood before the move, we decided
to try 'erb, a thai restaurant we've never tried before - and for a good reason it seems.
i hate complaining about food, but the tom yum soup & red chicken (both not pictured)
were very un-thai looking (no coriander!), and the salad came with a dressing that was
more like peanut butter. the best thing was the spicy beef - but still, they forgot our brown
rice request. oh well!

we decided to enjoy a bit of the rainy day at peter pan donuts, with a cup of joe, apple turnover
and a sour cream donut. despite what the photo looks like, it was delicious.
plus i love that place.

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

m made another great pasta - brussels sprouts, smoked oyster and dried polish mushrooms
tossed in olive oil, garlic, and dried chilis. so good!

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

yummy valentine's day dinner at samurai mama (despite the stupid name, the food
is really good there) - we got garlic kara-age (fried chicken), salmon avocado rolls,
yellowtail & shiso rolls, pork belly udon, and panna cotta-like special dessert.
all so good and perfectly seasoned/flavored. the fried chicken was especially well done!

Monday, February 13, 2012

fridge cleaning has started now that we have 1.5-2 weeks to move, and
today it was by making denjang jigae again, with csa chard, TJ tinned
salmon, tofu, and csa potatoes. with (over) rice and kimchi on the side.
yummy, comforting and healing!

Saturday, February 11, 2012

preemptive consumption of food around the house has started with our
move (just a few neighborhoods over) just a couple weeks away.

we got our csa veggie haul, so m made a winter veggie hash with potatoes,
beets, turnips, carrots, onions, with some brussels sprouts, and with a side
of turkey meatballs & leftover marinara sauce, both from trader joe's,
were a dang good combination of delicious flavors!
yum yum.

Friday, February 10, 2012

we hadn't been to papacitos in such a long time that we didn't even know they
were renovating at some point, getting rid of the garish blue paint all around.

we were there before the breakfast menu was closed, so m tried steak & eggs,
and i got their brooklyn breakfast burrito - scrambled eggs and soyrizo hash.
they haven't been too great in the past couple years, but these were pretty dang delicious.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012

home made shoyu ramen again - this time with shrimp and broccoli florets!
so brothy and delicious. mmmmm~

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

simple meal at seven hills cafe : chicken gyro wrap and veggie platter (consisting of falafels, zucchini pancakes, stuffed grape leaves, hummus & salad).
nothing special, though light and satisfying.
