i was very happy to learn that boneshakers, our favorite vegan coffee shop
hasn't completely perished away, but simply got melded into its sister store,
champs bakery (although with a much trimmer menu).

some of our old favorites were still there, including this amazing merckx werkx
(tempeh and olive tapenade & other veggies on ciabatta) and a bit of the brunch menu.
i tried their eggless rancheros (huevos rancheros with tofu in lieu of eggs), it was very good.
with i could eat all their donuts and cupcakes and cookies as well,
but alas, all of them had wheat that my body cannot breakdown.

and also, RIP boneshakers (and their yummy sandwiches & salads that didn't make the cut).

vamos al tequila is our place to go lately, and they were on top of
their game today as well with the enchiladas rojas with chicken
and their mexican salad (grilled chicken & mangos) - except
their enchiladas gave us horrible food poisoning.

will be taking a break from them for a while.

craving chicken thigh over rice and being turned away from excellent porkchop house,
we headed to wah mei fast food - we both got chicken thigh over rice, with a hard boiled egg,
though one was regular (third photo) and mine was with "black pepper" sauce (second photo).
both yummy but i thought the regular one was better than the gravy like black pepper.
though it was good.

hot and sour soup was nothing like any hot and sour soup we've had,
and it was especially hard to eat (i could only have a spoonful) on an unusually
hot spring day (79ºF!) but who cares when all this comes out to $11?

a delicious meal at grey dog café after a long bike ride along the hudson
on such a beautiful day. (what happened to spring, though?)
turkey burger with yummy fries, and my country salad with grilled chicken.
the mustardy vinaigrette was so good.

view of the hudson on the ride today - sunny & hazy :

i decidedly opted not to document yesterday's food at
BAD burger, which obviously never has been good but
we kept forgetting and kept going back - bad service,
very mediocre food - there i said it, and i'm never going back.

and today we wanted really solid, good brunch.
so we went back to supercore weekend brunch menu.
the japanese classic is so so good and filling.
i couldn't even finish mine today - beni tori (soy sauce simmered chicken)
and misoni (miso simmered salmon) with sides of brown rice, kimchi,
hijiki salad, and miso spinach.

a tall pint of sapporo in the backyard rounded out the meal,
so perfect on a warm, summery day in the middle of april!
(79ºF, sprinkled with rain!)

always great simple food at ash box café.
the usuals were in order - m's salami & bell pepper sandwich
and my salmon onigiri with a small egg salad on greens salad (ha!)
we got a bowl of miso soup and it was perfect on a grey day.

another great burger night special at habitat.
super great well-cooked burger and my cobb salad & corn bread.
pretty dang good!

simple veggie dinner at home tonight.
grilled endives (so surprisingly good with the charred flavor) and
pan-roasted brussels sprouts with garlic, mushrooms and tomato,
with sprinkles of pecorino romano.
so satisfying.

it's always hard to figure out where to take your visiting friends
from out of town, even your favorite places seen unsure.
we thought cho dang gol, our favorite in ktown, would be solid,
and it was alright (not as super spectacular as i thought it'd be).

i got my favorite, kimchi bijee stew, and other dishes were a sesame
mushroom tofu stew, made with their house made tofu, and also
the classic bibimbap in hot stone bowl.
and their banchan is always so so great.

back to vamos al tequila - can't keep away from that place!
although when we ordered 2 entrees tonight, in lieu of our usual
one entree & one salad, we were so full that we had to walk around
the entire neighborhood for 45 minutes to walk it off.

the burrito, which i forgot to photograph once cut open, was filled
with steak deliciously seasoned and cooked.
and my pollo en molé poblano was so so good - mmm molé!

and just a gratuitous kitty pic of them rolling around after ingesting catnip :

another great brunch at supercore.
the japanese classic breakfast (though, when you think about it, it's
not really so japanese classic after all) is so good there that we got two.
one with tofu patties and one with misoni (miso braised salmon).
the sides of spinach, kimchi and hijiki salad are so good too.

crazily windy rainstorm day is good for some warm vegetarian meal
at 'snice (after souther's great solo opening!).

hearty white bean & kale soup, my quinoa avocado salad,
j's tofu club, and m's veggie meatball sub.
nothing amazing, but pretty yummy.

sometimes you forget why you don't go to certain restaurants,
and decide to go back to see what is up (or different).

such was an instance when we had a late lunch at enid's today :
chicken fried chicken (the name of which just cracks me up out of absurdity,
though it's no fault of enid's) with sides of roasted squash and white bean salad,
and my house salad with grilled chicken.
all well-cooked and decently flavored, except we realized,
"oh wait, this isn't worth $13-14 a plate!!"

so see you in a couple years (or whenever our memory fades), enid's!

another beautiful bike day around the city, with an early dinner at hiroko's place,
where we hadn't been in months!!
chicken curry & hamburg steak. so good.

hmm... not so great meal at shanghai lee.
the manchurian sauce chicken was good, actually but the mapo tofu
was probably the weakest i've seen so far at restaurants.
very soupy and not flavorful at all.
poop - but what can yo do on a rainy rainy night.
