finally got to try the pizza at paulie gee's tonight
(our 5th try - they were not quite open yet or too full other times).
arugula salad and tonight's special, kale pizza with house-made fior di latte/mozz.
i have to order anything with kale as it is my favorite vegetable and somehow oddly rare on menus.
all the hype i'd heard so far was pretty spot on - the crust was just right,
charred flavor, chewiness, crispy exterior and all.

the first warmest day of the year (73ºF+!!), such a beautiful day,
with everyone out... most of my day was spent in the studio,
but managed to catch the sunset and step out for a midnight bike ride
through prospect park - with a huge salad at a diner after as a reward!

we just discovered while walking in the rain the other day
that River Barrel serves korean food now!
so tonight we took a short break amidst our heavy workload to check it out.
definitely more pricey and limited in option than dokebi
or other korean restaurants, but their food was excellent.
veggie bibimbop (should've gotten brown rice, i forgot to ask)
and a korean "hangover soup", which had amazing slow-cooked berkshire
pork in it that melted in your mouth.
and here i thought i'd go back to being a vegetarian.
i've never had this hangover soup before (since i'm never hung over, much less drunk),
but i imagine it was a version of haejangguk, minus the bloody part.

after hearing much hype from blogs and friends AND reading the NYT coffee round-up,
we headed to the newly opened (& long waited) blue bottle coffee in williamsburg to try it out.
and i have to say... it was good, but all of us agreed that it could've been better...
my soy latte was good, but it wasn't "outstanding" as NYT called out.
(they didn't even give that rating to La Colombe!!)
the slow-drip coffee was kind of acidic and bitter (burnt bitter, not good),
and a friend who's tried their SF store wasn't super happy with the latte.
i'll definitely check back in a few months in the warmer days to try their mega-serious looking cold brews (top photo), that is if i can stomach the uber-coolness of the place & the crowd inside...
till then, i'm sticking to my good ol' usual neighborhood haunts for my cup o' joe.

we made plans to ride our bikes up to nyack ny through nj across the george washington bridge,
but due to unforeseen hurdles & circumstances (= giant tangled tree limbs on the road in the state park),
we only made it up to about englewood/alpine area.
after having asked a local, we decided to ride a bit back south to tenafly,
where we found this classic diner.
can't tell if the food really was that good or if it was that camping syndrome
where everything tastes good anyway.
portobello wrap, omelettes, burgers, coffee...
the burgers, especially, were incredible.
it was a blissful springy day finally, anyway.

food fest for hinamatsuri (雛祭り) at my friends' place.
they had handmade mochi dyed pink (with beets!) - some kansai style, some kanto style, all with cherry blossom leaves.
we finished grazing with more grazing of birthday cake cluster
of magnolia bakery's mini cheese cakes.
